Pontop Pike transmitting station
Coordinates: 54°52'08" N, 01°46'15" W

The Pontop Pike transmitting station is a facility for telecommunications and broadcasting situated on a hill of the same name, between Stanley and Consett, County Durham, near the village of Dipton, England. It is owned and operated by National Grid Wireless. Pontop Pike is the main station which provides Newcastle and the County Durham area with television and network FM radio. Television and radio coverage in parts of Newcastle itself are supplemented by signals from the Fenham relay. Analogue Channel 5 and ILR are transmitted from Burnhope, which can be seen from Pontop Pike.

Burnhope transmitting station
Coordinates: 54°49'18" N, 01°42'52" W

The Burnhope station was established by the Independent Television Authority in 1959 to provide the programmes of Tyne-Tees Television to Newcastle and the North-East of England. From 15 July 1974, Burnhope extended it's remit by providing the transmission for the first Independent Local Radio (ILR) service in North-East England - Newcastle's Metro Radio on 97.0 FM (now 97.1 FM). The main analogue and digital tv services and FM radio for the immediate area are now transmitted from the BBC site at Pontop Pike, with the exception of Channel 5, whose analogue transmissions come from Burnhope.
