    Radio broadcasting in Italy began in 1924 (1RO Unione Radiofonica Italiana / URI, Rome), preceded by Araldo Telefonico (1909) and Radio Araldo (1923). URI was transformed to EIAR in 1927 and to RAI in 1944. FM radio was introduced in 1950 and DAB digital radio in 1998. Italian Radio-Television – RAI (Radiotelevisione Italiana) is the national public broadcaster, with 5 national radio networks, 20 regional branches and 5 digital channels. Rai International Radio was broadcasting on shortwave in 25 languages from 1930 to 2011. RAS (Rundfunkanstalt Südtirol) is the public radio and television of Autonomous Province of South Tyrol. First private radio station in Italy launched in 1975. Broadcasting is regulated by the Authority for Communications Guarantees – AGCOM (Autrità per le Garanzie nelle Comunicazioni) and its 21 Regional Committees for Communications (Corecom). American Forces Network has radio network in Italy. Traffic radio is available on all major roads via low-power transmitters network on 103.3 FM. Currently there are over 20 national commercial networks and 1200 local stations in Italy, using 45 AM and 17000 FM transmitters; DAB digital radio with 3 national and 34 local multiplexes with over 500 transmitters. Primary language on radio is Italian, with some stations in German (South Tirol).
